Q: What did the witch do to Mr. Halloway in chapter 44?

Brody, the witch was trying to kill Mr. Halloway by stopping his heart. When Mr. Halloway laughed it hurt the dust witch, so Mr. Halloway was able to protect himself and he never got hurt.

In Chapter 44 on page 227 the witch tries to stop Mr. Halloways heart, but when he laughed he hurt her and she didn't kill him afterall.
