When they were at the Carnival and Mr. Halloway met up with Jim and Will. After he had a long talk with Mr. Dark and the Illistrator man. Mr. Halloway told the boys to hide until later at night and come to the library. Will was crying because he was terrified that Mr. Dark will catch them and kill them and that his mother rode the carousel and went in the mirror maze. Mr. Dark is looking for will because he knows that the Carnival is evil, and knows all the cruel acts Mr. Dark put regular people in like lighting rod salesman.

Chapter 42: Mr. Halloway told the boys to hide. Mr. Dark showed up at the door. Asked where Jim and Will were, and Mr. Halloway would not tel him. He acted as though he would like to know as well. After Mr. Halloway refused Mr. Dark offer to ride the carousel in exchange for the boys hiding place, Mr. dark used 2 tactics to navigate the boys. The second one worked. By tell Will that his mother had rode the carousel, and then to the mirror maze. Will started to cry, and Mr. Dark found them
