Why does Charles Halloway hide that there's a carnival comeing to town?

He never really told why but I think that he was apart of the carnival because he crumpled up the paper and threw it in the fire so his family wouldnt see it.

I think he hides that the carnival is coming because he has been to a coogar and dark carnival before and knows about the carousel changing peoples age. If the carousel goes forward it turns people really old but not dead, if I goes backwards it makes them young again.
