In chapter 16 after Jim went to the mirror maze, why do you think he became so needy of Will?

Jim became more needy towards Will in chapter 16 because he knows the mirror maze has some kind of effect and he wants Will to protect him from it. He even says "You're always going to be around, aren't you, Will? To protect me?" (page 69).

Jim acts like he needs Will because Will would keep him out of trouble. Will said, “Jim, you nut, I’m taking you home” (Bradbury 69).
