Portion Sized Essay
Do you get an hour or more of exercise every day? If you do, good job! That is the recommended amount for kids to get every day to keep you healthy. In this essay I will tell you about the portion plate, the importance of a wide variety of food, the problem about too many people being overweight and some things you can do to be healthier. I hope you can use some of my ideas to be healthier!
What is the Portion Plate?
The Portion Plate is a tool used to help people learn about the right-sized portions in a balanced meal. The Portion Plate recommends one serving of vegetables the size of a tennis ball at each meal. The serving of fruit should be the size of a yo-yo. Together the serving of fruits and d vegetables should take up half of your plate. The serving of grain should be the size of a CD, and the serving of lean meat or other protein the size of a box of eight crayons. Does your plate reach those requirements?
Do You Have Variety?
A large variety of food is also an important part of a healthy diet. Darker colored fruit and vegetables are also very important part of a healthy diet. Dark green and orange veggies contain the most vitamins and minerals your body needs. Try to have different foods for each meal of the day. For example, even though having peanut butter on whole wheat bread is a healthy meal, having that for every meal of the day would not be a good variety, and that meal lacks color! A healthy meal has both variety and bright colors, (that aren’t artificial).

What’s the Problem with Too Many People Overweight?
Did you know that 25 million Americans are overweight or about to become so? That is 33.6% percent of kids and teens from age 2-19. The percentage is up by 28.2% percent from 2000. With so many kids overweight the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other obesity-related problems have gone up.
What Can You Do To Be Healthier?
There are a lot of things that you yourself can do to be healthier. I will give you some examples of things you can do. These things are:
• Play outside or exercise at least an hour every day. Kids should get at least that amount to be healthy.
• Encourage your family to eat out less often, especially at fast food restaurants. Fast food often contains empty calories and grease that your body doesn’t need.
• Try to have two hours or less of screen time every day. Read a book or play outside instead of watching T.V. or playing computer games.
• Control your desire to eat out of boredom. There are lots of other things you can do instead of eating.
• Drink lots of water and milk. Water and milk are a lot better for you than sugary drinks like pop.
• Try to eat at least five servings of fruits and veggies a day. Dark colored veggies are the best for you.
You might already do these things, but I thought that these main things would be important. Now you know about the portion plate and some other things health related. I hope you learned something and use my ideas to be healthier and happier!

I really like how you put this "portion sized essay" in a way that was very easy to read, even though there was a lot to read you put it in a way that made everything pretty easy to read.
