We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

Water Pollution The worls is at risk! Read on...
What is water pollution?
Water pollution are Oil leaks,Sewage,Landfill sites,And Human waste.Water pollution is extremley bad for our enviroment. These are some types of Water Pollution: Surface water pollution,Groundwater,Microbiological,Chemical,
Oxygen Depleting,Nutrients,And Suspended Matter.

Surface waters resources of the earth. They are found on the exterior of the earths crust.
Oceans,Rivers,Lakes. These waters can be polluted in a number of ways, and this is called Surface Water Pollution.
Alot of the earths water is found underground in soil or under rock structures called Aquifers. Humans often obtain drinking water, and build wells to access it.When this water becomes polluted it is called Groundwater Pollution.Groundwater Pollution is often caused by pesticide contamination from the soil, this can infect our drinking water and cause huge problems.
Microbiologiacal water pollution is usually a natural form of water pollution causedby microorganisms. Many types of microorganisms live in water and cause fish, land animals and humans to become ill Microotganisms such as: Bacteria,Viruses,Protozoa.
Serious diseases as cholera come from microorganisms that live in the water. These diseases usually affect the health of people in poorer countries,as they do not have the facilities to treat polluted water.
Idustrial and agricultural work involves the use of many different chemicals that can run-off into water and pollute it.
Chemical water pollution.
Metals and solvents from industrial work can pollute rivers and lakes. These are poisonous to Run-offs of these pesticides can cause water pollution and poisen aquatic life.Subsequently, birds, humans and other animals may be poisoned if the eat infected fish.

Petroleum is annother form of chemical polluted that usually contaminates water through oil spills when a ship ruptures.Oil spills usually have only a localized affect on wildlife but can spread for miles. The oil can cause death of many fish and stick to the feathers of seabirds causing them to lose the ability to fly.
Suspended Matter
Some pollutants do not dissolve in water their molecules are to big to mix between water molecules. This material is called
Particulate Matter and often be caused by water pollution.
The suspended particles eventually settle and cause a think silt at the bottom. This is harmful to marine life that lives on the floor of rivers or lakes.
Biodegradable substances are often suspended in water and cause problems by increasing the amount of anaerobic microorganisms present.
Toxic chemicals suspended in water can be harmful to the development and survival of aquatic life.
Nutrients
Nutrients are essential for plant growth and development.
Many nutrients are found in wastewater and fertilizers, and these can cause excess weed and algae growth if large concentrations end up in water.
This can contaminate water and clog filters.
This can be damaging to aquatic organisms as the algae use up the oxygen in the water, leaving none for the surrounding marine life.
Oxygen Depleting
Microorganisms that live in water feed on biodegradable substances. When too much biodegradable is added to the water, the number of microorganisms increase and the available oxygen. This is called oxygen depleting.
When oxygen levels in the water are depleted, relatively harmless aerobic microorganisms and anaerobic microorganisms begin to thrive. Some anaerobic microorganisms are harmful to people, animals and the environment, as they produce harmful toxins such as ammonia and sulfides.
How will I help to not pollute?
Pick up garbage that is on trails and in the forest. Also You should pick up after you dogs so there isn't dogs scat everywhere.
