Latin in Our Lives: pre-mortem
The September 19th, 2011 issue of The New Yorker Magazine contains a drawing by Robert Mankoff of a doctor addressing a hospital patient in bed, looking down at his medical chart, saying, 'O.K., let's just have a look-see at this PRE-MORTEM.'
What is the literal meaning of the phrase PRE (PRAE)-MORTEM, to what more common phrase does it allude and what grammatical mistake does the new phrase contain?
