Words with the power to change the world Authors use different "tools" or literary elements to create effect in their writing. Some examples of the tools are: exaggeration or hyperbole, rhythm, rhyme, similes, and metaphors. The author might use sensory details, to appeal to the reader's senses, which help the reader experience what is happening in the poem. All of these elements help give the poem more depth, and make it more interesting.
