What is water pollution?
What are some of the sources of water pollution?
What are some of the consequences of water pollution
what is water pollution? Ground water can get polluted for example chemicals like pesticides can seep down through the ground and contaminate the ground water. There is also heavy metals that come from big industries that filter into the water. Did you know every time you throw a little tiny piece of garbage in the ocean you’re helping the fourteen billion pounds of garbage that are dumped into the oceans every year multiply. There is also surface water pollution surface water is the water on the earth’s crust like rivers and oceans. There is also oxygen depletion it is when micro organisms feed on biodegradable substances when to much biodegradable substances are in the water microorganism's will multiply and use up all the oxygen. Another type of water pollution is chemicals chemicals usually get into the water by oil spills. Another type would be microbial it is when micro organisms make all the fish ill. Another type would be nutrients when too much nutrients get in the water algae grows and it uses up all the oxygen. One more would be suspended matter it is when hazard's chemicals get in the water and are dangerous to marine life development. In this paragraph you learned about some of the types of water pollution in the next paragraph you will learn about some sources of water pollution.
What are some sources of water pollution?
there is sewage and waste water pollution it comes from domestic house holds and industrial companies. Another is marine dumping it is when items like six packs get dumped into the oceans. Another would be industrial waste it is when industries use water to carry away waste. Another would be nuclear waste it is when scientific studies or medical studies are done when this is done they pollute the water through the nuclear fuel cycle. Oil spills are another one they come from oil rigs and boats they suffocate fish and stop sun from getting to the plants. When we pollute the air the water mixes with this and then it creates acid rain then the acid rain gets into lakes and rivers. Another would be under ground storage leakages it is when steel pipes that holds dangerous substances that are exposed to the environment cu-rode and contaminates the earth around it. Another would be global warming it is when the normal heat rises due to green house gases. One more would be eutrophication it is when the environment becomes enriched with nitrates it can become a problem for marine life in lakes. In this paragraph you learned about some sources of water pollution now lets a little about the consequences of water pollution.
What are some consequences of water pollution
Some of the consequences of water pollution are when heavy metals pollute the water it can be fatal to marine life such as fish and shell fish and when we eat these fish it can cause birth defects. There is also industrial waste that contains toxic compounds that damage marine life. Another would be organic matter and nutrients they cause an increase in algae that depletes oxygen that suffocates the fish. Acid rain is harmful to marine life because the sulfate that is in it can cause health problems to marine life that are in the lakes and rivers that it rains in. Suspended particles will reduce the quality of drinking water and makes water get less sun light witch kills plants in the water.
What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted? People need to know how to throw away our waste properly. Preventing water pollution is a public problem. Septic tanks are a way to clean polluted water because the solid material is separated depending on the density. The heavy particles sink to the bottom and the lighter particles like soap scum form a layer at the top of the tank. Another way is ozone waste water treatment the problem with it is that it cost electricity and you can not do it if power is out and it cost money. a good thing is that the ozone becomes back in to oxygen very quickly. It kills bacteria efficiently but it can’t dissolve salts and minerals. industrial water treatment. it goes through the first part of the treatment by getting rid of solid particles and inorganic material are removed by filters. the secondary part is when they reduce some of the organic witch is done by biological filters and it processes it naturally and degrades the organic waste. Their is no foul odours or residues that come from the treatment.
What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from becoming polluted?
Don’t litter in our oceans because it kills marine animals. People also litter in lakes and some actions are scientist could create pesticides that don’t affect water in harmful ways. Solutions are finding the urban area and reduce dependence of pollutants. Pick up litter that you see on beaches and throw it away in a nearby garbage bin. Be careful what you poor down your toilet or sink. Don’t throw oil or paints or other harmful waste down your sink or toilet. Don’t run tap water when not necessary this help because it makes it less likely to get water shortages.
What are nitrates and how do they get into our water supply?
Nitrates is dissolved nitrogen in a primary form in water. Nitrates are oxygen combined with nitrogen. Fertilizers seep
What effect do high nitrates have on people?
If people under that is under the age of 6 months that drink water that is high in nitrates has the highest chance of getting methemoglobinemia or baby blue syndrome. If adults drink water that is high in nitrates it does not effect like at all. If pregnant women drink water that is high in nitrates it would not effect her but it will effect the baby so the baby will have birth effects.
What effect do high nitrate levels have on people?
The safe amount of nitrates is 10m/g per litter but if infants drink water that is under 10m/g per litter it is really bad for them.
What should a person do if there are high nitrate levels in their water supply?
One way to get ride of nitrates that is in your water supply, which is boil the water which burns the nitrates, and other germs. Another way is by reverse osmosis, which forces water under pressure through a membrane that filters out minerals and nitrate. One-half to two-thirds of the water remains behind the membrane as rejected water.another way to get ride of nitrates and other germs is to Ion-exchange it, which is to take another substance such as chloride and trades places with nitrate.the other way to get ride of nitrates and other germs is An ion exchange unit is filled with special resin beads that are charged with chloride. As water passes over the beads, the resin takes up nitrate in exchange for chloride.the last final way to get ride of nitrates and other germs is Blending is another method to reduce nitrates in drinking water.Mix contaminated water with clean water from another source to lower overall nitrate concentration. Blended water is not safe for infants but is acceptable for livestock and healthy adults.
What can be done to help prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?
Farmers need to not over fertilize there crops and farms because than it could put nitrates into our drinking water, lakes, and oceans.a person like needs to check there lawn almost every day needs to see if there lawn is over 0.500 and if there crops and farms get over fertilized it could put nitrates in our water supply.
