Living in Space
“3,2,1, liftoff!” As the rocket launches, the solid rocket boosters take the gigantic machine off the ground. It is soaring in the air, using up the fuel in the main tank. It is hard to think there are living beings inside the monster that is heading off to unknown space. But liftoff is just the beginning to a long and tiring mission to space.
While living in space, the astronauts also have to keep a basic daily hygiene routine. The way they keep themselves clean is almost the same as the way we do, on Earth, but some things they do seem a little strange to us. But they have no other way, they are in space! The astronauts sometimes use a rinseless shampoo cap to wash their hair. This comes in handy because if you don't have to rinse your hair, there is no mess! These caps are also found in hospitals, and used for patients who can't take a shower. They can comb their hair normally, shave normally, and go to the bathroom a certain way. Also, people on board ship can brush their teeth normally.
When thinking of going to space, have you ever wondered what it was like to eat with no gravity? Well, with new studies, the astronauts can eat pretty much anything they want! A menu for one of the days consisted of :
Breakfast
granola w/ raisins
breakfast rolls
pears
vanilla drink
coffee
tea
Lunch
chicken strips
macaroni
rice w/ butter
apple cider
As you can see, space sure doesn't come out of a toothpaste bottle!
Working and floating and having fun in space sure makes you tired! But how do you sleep when there is no gravity? Easy. The astronauts usually sleep in sleeping bags, but they have to strap themselves to a secure surface in order to keep themselves safe in the night. Otherwise, the people would be banged around and might get seriously injured!
Now you know a lot about living in space, so are you ready to go? Be sure to bring a sleeping bag, toothbrush, and a hair brush!
