maui and the fire fingers One shining night, Maui wanted to see what would happen if all the fires were extinguished, and he also wanted to see where fire came from. Maui got a fresh, clear bucket of water and gently poured it over the blazing fires. They made a sizzling noise as they went out. Then he went to bed and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning when everyone was awake they said with a loud sound “what has happened to the fire?” “Where has it gone?” “Who would do such a thing?” Maui owned up and told them that he had done it. Taranga Maui’s Mother, and the rest of the village were angry and sent Maui to his grandmother Mahuika. Mahuika lived underground and when Maui arrived he asked Mahuika for a fire finger child. Mahuika asked for Maui’s identity and he replied. Mohuika said “you must be my grandson” and gave Maui one of her fire fingers. As Maui was leaving the cave and heading back to the village he came across a crystal clear stream. Maui chucked the fire finger in the stream and went back to his grandmother for another fire finger. Then he chucked that one in the stream as well. Again and again he came back until Mahuika had only one fire child left. Mahuika was furious, her body was filled with anger and rage. Mahuika chased Maui, she knew that Maui was a trickster but she wasn’t fast enough so she threw her last fire finger with all her might. In a couple of minutes raging fire burst into flames. Maui ran for his life and called a prayer to the Gods to let him change shape into a bird. He glided through the air up into the deep blue sky, his tail feathers got burnt and he saw a lake so he called another prayer to transform into a fish. His prayer was accepted and he swam in the lake. But that didn’t stop Mahuika; she made the lake bubble and sizzle, and Maui swam for his life. Maui said another prayer but this time it wasn’t shape shifting. It was for rain to come. A little bit of rain came, but it wans’t enough, so he prayed again for more rain and more rain came but it still wasn’t enough to put out the blazing hot fire so he called for even more rain and a storm came and put out Mahuika. Mahuika threw her last fingernails in two special trees the kaikomalco tree and pine tree. Maui saw which branches and set off back to the village. When he arrived they all asked “where is the fire?” Maui replied “in these two branches, you just rub them together then you have a blazing fire.
