Bridges The state of Maine, and the state of New Hampshire were arguing about what they are going to do with the Memorial Bridge. The Memorial bridge is an old and rusty bridge, that stands above the water, connecting to Kittery ME,and Portsmouth NH. It needs to be repaired. The people of Maine did not want to fix it or pay for it, but they wouldn't mind making it be a bridge for walkers and bikers only, and no cars. But, the state of New Hampshire said no, that would be too problematic for traffic. So New Hampshire is going to pay for repairs. The bridge is only going to last for about 2-5 years. It rises up to about 170 feet, when it needs to be lifted. It was dedicated in 1923 to the Veterans of World Ward I. The feet of the bridge have sunken in about 82 feet into the bedrock. The bridge is only one bridge out of the three bridges in the Piscataqua river. The other two are the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, and the Piscataqua River bridge. In the summer, the bridge goes up about every half an hour to let boat traffic go under. The bridge will soon be repaired and will be safer for traffic going over.
