 Octopus I am going to tell you about their size, their body, and their color and now these are my octopus facts. Octopus’s average weight is 33 lbs wow they are larger than I thought! Their average length is 14 feet that is almost as long as 2 regular school white boards. The largest of its species scientifically documented was an animal with a live mass of 156.5lb. The largest species of octopus is a giant octopus. The octopus has no internal skeleton isn’t that interesting! All octopuses are venomous but only the Blue ringed octopus is deadly to humans. They have 3 hearts, two pump blood through the gills and the 3rd pumps blood through the body I would have never guessed they had so many hearts. They eat crabs, scallops, snails, fish, and turtles. They can change into any color at any time isn’t that amazing. How do they change color? This is how! Many of these creatures have special pigment cells called chromatophores in their skin. By controlling the size of the cells they can vary their color and even create changing patterns. Chromatophores are connected to the nervous system. And that is how they change color. Why do they change color? They change color to camouflage. The most common octopus is called the Octopus Vulgaris it is the most studied octopus of all species. The Vulgaris grows to 25 cm in mantle length with arms up to 1 m long. Vulgaris is caught by bottom trawls on a huge scale off the northwestern coast of Africa. Maybe someday they will stop hunting them and realize that if you keep hunting them they won’t be the most common octopus.
